Seven Day Weather Forecast for the Yorkshire Dales.

Known as the ‘friendly sport’ there is a long tradition and history of Fell Running in the Yorkshire Dales.  There are now probably more races and more active clubs than there ever has been. Including some long distance walks, there are now over 70 fell races in the Yorkshire Dales to choose from!

From classics such as Burnsall and the Three Peaks to the many show events that have sprung up over the years to become firm Calendar favourites on the Fell Racing Scene!

There are races for young and old alike with Categories that range from U12 - to over 80! It truly is a sport that can be participated in by the whole family.

There are many well Established Clubs, that cater for all ages and if you are looking for an alternative to road running that has fresh air and magnificent scenery in abundance, then fell running could just be the sport you are looking for!

These races, previously organised by  Dave & Eileen Woodhead (woodentops)are now looked after by Wharfedale Harriers alongside the many others that they now organise.

For information about the Fell Running Association (FRA), latest news, races and results, Click Here!

The BOFRA 2026 (British Open Fell Runners Association) championship comprises 15 junior races and 16 senior races.

Whilst non-members are more than welcome to enter these races, you must be a fully paid up member of BOFRA to claim championship points. Race entry fees apply!

There are a number of well established Fell Running Clubs that serve the Yorkshire Dales and most cater for all ages and all standards.

If you are interested in Fell Running and new to the sport or, have just moved to the area then take the opportunity of contacting a club to find out which one might suit you best.

Fell Running Clubs in and around the Yorkshire Dales!

Wharfedale Harriers - based in and around Silsden/Skipton, Wharfedale Harriers came into being in 1998 and was initially formed to bring together people with an interest in off road running, mainly Fell Running.  Again, they organise a number of fell races & recently took over the ‘Woodentops’ races from Dave & Eileen Woodhead.

Howgill Harriers - Centred around Kirkby Stephen & Sedbergh the club was formed in 1986 by running enthusiasts. They welcome members of all ages and abilities, and the focus is on enjoyment!

Helm Hill - Helm Hill Runners is a Kendal based running club. Formed in 1990, they currently have around 250 members about half of which are juniors.  Amongst other things, they organise and run the very successful and popular Kendal Winter League!

Swaledale Outdoor Club - Formed in 1966 and based around Richmond in Swaledale this club caters for a number of different outdoor activities including the organisation of the very successful, Swaledale Marathon.

Settle Harriers - Settle Harriers is a small club based at the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales.  Founded in 1987, they are a growing club and organise a number of fell races including Penyghent Fell and Settle Hills.

WoodenTops - Read Boff Whalley’s article on Dave and Eileen Woodhead’s immense contribition to the fell running scene - In 2015, both were awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the sport for inspiring thousands of athletes, young and old - Download and read all of the UP & Down Magazines HERE!
